I really love the pronunciation of Rodarte — Ro-daaa-tay. Can’t name why, Maybe subconsciously it sounds like ‘Roald Dahl’ and maybe it sounds like a franco-dutch word. I guess it’s just like someone’s a natural-born beauty, this word is a natural born sound-good. But it keeps bugging me, why the talented fine-arty-literature-studying sisters chose this name as their brand’s name??

After a solid researching of 20 mins on-line….(yeah, I really didn’t think it could be that hard to find normally and I know this time is including reading through articles and articles)…I eventually found the answer on an interview on vogue.it. It’s from their mother’s name Rodart, which is an old latin-french name and they add E at the end, just make the whole word sound more artful. (you can read the full interview here.) (and I also wonder since when using their mother’s maiden name become a trend? Proenza Schoulder is also a combination of the 2 boy’s mom’s names.)
During the whole research process I noticed that the sisters have just launched the new menswear line. Although a few pieces only, but totally adorable (same as the price).

Then I realized the famous (or rather infamous) gown worn by Keira Knightley a few years ago of which appreciated different critics is also by Rodarte.

Then Rodarte, Joyce HK and Unicef collaborated together 4 outfits to raise money and all 4 outfits are inspired by 4 different movies by most influential artistic actress Maggie Cheung. (Very clever move, if they’ve chosen other actresses, i wouldn’t look at the sisters in the same way.)
From the movie ‘Hero’…

From the movie ‘in the mood for love’…

From Maggie’s early year movie ‘Heroic Trio’…

From Cannes Film Festival winner ‘Clean’…

Rodarte’s story is like a modern legend. Their style is futuristic and post-apocalyptic (modern – tick). Within a short a few years, Rodarte fast becomes world famous by mainly spreading out by internet bloggers (modern – tick). Although they started with choosing celebrity as their media-carrier at the beginning, they certainly has won Anna Wintour’s favour with the first 10 piece collection. Rest of all is already history. With the world spinning so fast and many old fashion houses are struggling, Rodarte will become a major part of new blood and a house name to nowadays fashion world.

With her hair loosely tucked at back, her T-shirt roughly rolled up on sleeves, and her smile mixing with a bit of tiredness due to hard working, all of these sketch out one of most influential designer, Phoebe Philo.

I’ve always admired her and would like to think that my taste has been growing up together on the same pace with Phoebe Philo. Since first time learning her modest suggestion of only helping Stella McCartney’s Chief Designer role at Chloe, I knew this girl was not that simple. She took over at Chloe and delivered the super girlie looks, where you could find her own bohemia personal style.
I liked those girly peasant looks…

and those romantic folky looks…

Then the girl slowly grew into a woman. When she was pregnant, she simply wants to create some practical clothes for not only pregnant women, but real women, who do have a bit of tummy and a bit of curve. All women I knew were cheering the fact that she brought back the tunic and loose baby doll shift dress around 2007-8.

Then after a while of absence from fashion industry (in order to spend quality time with family and bringing up the new born kids) and with many people’s curiosity of her next place, Celine signed her up. Celine, the traditional french fashion house, has always been at the back of my fashion radar. But with Philo’s radiant personality and strong profile as a designer, Celine has successfully come back to top of the check list of every fashion insider.

Now, with a grown-up vibe, not only feeling from Philo but from myself and thousands of other late 20 year-olds, the minimalism is widely accepted again in this new decade. Women needs simple but sexy styles. High quality, strong, powerful and reduced. She perfectly understands, less is more!

Powerful full lips, ginger red hair, dramatic body pose, that is Kristen McMenamy. I vividly remembered her from my early teenage time by flipping through Elle and my finger tips stopped at the Versace advert. There she stood and seemed shouting out—-’I am the 90s power women!!’

Even with the cutsey floral print in Prada’s campaign just before mid 90s, she still looks very powerful and womenly there. The young I used to think how perfect she looks there and dreamt about myself how I would want to look like her when grown up.

Lanvin invited her back last year for their campaign which is a real surprise to me as I couldn’t recognise her at all.

Until she had the offical catwalk return appreared on Viktor & Rolf AW2010 catwalk show just finished in Paris.

I know it’s absolutely crime to mention a lady’s age but being 43 and looking like this, she is a true Super Woman!

Since Kenzo’s show swallowed my mind after SS2010, I’ve been completely convinced this smart-mixing-casual, glitter-mixing-matt concept. It suits someone like me—-casual, laid back, occasionally want to dress up a bit but not too dressy and still with comfiness.

He started the show with Camel, Navy and Light Khaki and that light khaki reminds me a washed old Chinese army uniform, which I used to wear in school during summer training camp. The colours are very conservative. The shapes, not! They’ve been very womanly cut and with a dash of leopard print thrown over, it looks like, if Communist Party could let loose a little bit, that would be how people dressed during Culture Revolution.
Slowly, he introduced more colours and prints. The Navi Blue…rich purple…washed olive…dash of pink….. All colours are mixed in with a bit of other colours: Blue with tiny strokes of orange and green; Purple with some smudged deep navy. He even mixes colours in that contradicted point of view, which is visually challenging our usual colour mix logic again and again.

While watching his show, I felt so inspired and literally wrote down 8 outfit ideas drawn from my own wardrobe…yeah…I can’t afford to buy all the original looks just yet… …so watch this place…ehhrrr…with my own mix-n-match in Van Noten style.
