Another milestone

Posted by awais on January 17, 2011 | No comments

It’s weird to think about how quickly time passes. It seems like yesterday that we were writing our 100th post, this one is our 200th. Hits to the blog have been increasing steadily since then, so we thought it might be a good idea to highlight some of our most popular posts and categories to our new readers:

  • A Dash of Eccentricity – A post about one of the most remarkable women of the 20th century, the Marchesa Casati, and how she keeps influencing designers even today, more than half a century after her death. This post was posted as a part of our Fashionology category, a category for all the fashion geeks out there. In this category we cover topics like fashion history, fashion theory and write about different fashion exhibitions.
  • Long Live McQueen – We were both huge fans of Alexander McQueen and his death came as a huge shock. In this post we looked back at his career and talked about some of our favourite moments.
  • One of our most popular features is ‘I love you back‘. This is a street fashion feature with a little twist. Instead of taking front pictures of people in the street, we try to show street fashion from a different perspective, the back. Expect candid shots, like this one of Susie Bubble, or this one of a lady in red.
  • Another popular feature is our ‘Fashion Windows‘ category – a category for those who, like us, love visual merchandising and creative shop displays. In it we regularly post pictures from fashion windows in London and Oslo, our home cities, but also from cities we visit, like Shanghai, Barcelona, Houston and Dallas to name a few.
  • A bag can tell a lot about a person’s personality, in ‘what’s in your bag‘ we interview friends, bloggers and fashionistas about the contents of their handbags.

Indoor winter shoot

Posted by awais on January 2, 2011 | 3 comments

The other day when I was emptying my phone’s memory card, I came across these pictures that I took at a shoot where I was the assistant stylist a few weeks back. As last time, the fashion editor for the shoot was my friend John Ødegård Jensen and the photographer was Andreas Kleiberg. The models were Jørn (?) and Andreas’s assistant, Trond.

The shoot is an “outdoor shoot”, but as you can see all the pictures were taken inside a studio. The models were wearing a harness and were suspended from the ceiling of the studio so they could do different poses in the air. When the pictures get printed in the magazine, however, Andreas will use his magic photoshop skills and make it look as if everything is outdoors. Ah, the wonders of technology.

Hunger Pains

I recently stumbled upon these incredible pictures by NYC-based photographer Ted Sabarese. In this series, each model’s clothing is made entirely of real food and depicts a meal that the person was craving. Sabarese shot this series in January 2009, so in other words a long time before Lady Gaga wore her meat dress.

World AIDS Day: A good start

Posted by awais on December 1, 2010 | No comments

For the past 16 years, charity t-shirts benefiting World AIDS Day have been part of every collection from Maison Martin Margiela. The t-shirts are produced in different colours with contrasted text every season, and bear the following quote in English:

“There is more action to be done to fight AIDS than to wear this t-shirt, but it’s a good start”

In addition to the seasonal English version of the t-shirt, this year the cult label has decided to issue the t-shirt in another language than English for the first time ever – and the language they have chosen is Japanese. The limited edition t-shirts featuring the above quote in kanji-characters, will be available exclusively at Maison Martin Margiela stores around the globe today December 1st, on World AIDS Day.

Each year, the maison donates a percentage from the sales to a French charity called AIDES – an organisation dedicated to the fight against HIV/AIDS. Over the years 170 000 t-shirts have been sold and the sales have brought a contribution of more than 700 000 Euro to the charity. There is perhaps more actions to be done to fight HIV and AIDS than wearing a t-shirt, but hey, as the maison say themselves – it’s a good start.

Kate Spade

The holiday season is over us and the designer boutiques and department stores have started rolling out their christmas and winter displays. Some are really subtle, some are really in your face, whilst some are so plain that you can’t really tell it’s a christmas window. More pictures after the jump.

First outdoor shoot

Posted by awais on October 29, 2010 | 7 comments

A couple of weeks ago I worked on my first outdoor photo shoot. All the shoots I’ve assisted on up until now have been indoor ones. The location for the shoot was Kjeller – an airport about 30 mins outside Oslo. Once again, the fashion editor I was assisting was John Ødegård Jensen, the photographer was the very talented Andreas Kleiberg and the model du jour was André Bentzer. André has previously done campaigns for Paco Rabanne, American Eagle, Dolce & Gabbana and Dsquared2. He has also walked for several major labels, including D&G and Zegna.

André doing his Matt Damon impersonation. John and I agreed that the resemblance was uncanny.

Fashion Windows: Oslo (Paul Smith) October 2010

Posted by awais on October 16, 2010 | No comments

A slightly different Fashion Windows this time since the shop I’ve snapped pictures of is inside a department store and therefore doesn’t have a ‘window’. This doesn’t stop it from doing fabulous displays though! For the past few months, Steen & Strøm has been rebuilding their entire menswear floor. Both the Burberry and Hugo Boss concessions have been expanded and one of my favourite designers, Paul Smith, has opened a brand new shop-in-shop. This is one of two recent concessions in Scandinavia, the other one being in Copenhagen’s Illum department store.

The Steen & Strøm shop has clothes from the Paul Smith Jeans, Paul Smith London and PS Paul Smith lines. The concession also has shoes and items from the accessory collections available. Steen & Strøm, Eger and a few other fashion boutiques in Oslo have been stocking Paul Smith for quite some time, but this is the first proper concession dedicated solely to the designer and his different lines. My favourite part of the new concession is the baby blue signature wall with photo frames in different sizes. The space in the concession is quite limited, but the visual merchandising team has made the most of the space they had available. I think the way they have decorated the wall is a good way to compensate for not having a real window to dress. The wall to the right of the photo wall is dedicated to suits, whilst the wall to the left has a cabinet with small leather goods and other accessories.

Behind the scenes at a fashion shoot

Posted by awais on October 4, 2010 | 2 comments

A couple of weeks ago I had the opportunity to work as an assistant stylist at a fashion shoot for the Norwegian edition of an international men’s lifestyle magazine. While at the set, I took a couple of “behind-the-scenes-pictures”. During the shoot I posted a few of these to twitter, but I thought I’d gather them all up in a proper post.

The editorial we were shooting was six pages and we had fourteen different outfits. The first thing we did was to hang up all the clothes, outfit by outfit, and lay out all the shoes and accessories before starting the shoot. We also had some extra clothes with us in case of last minute changes or adjustments to the outfits.

The stylist I worked with was my very good friend John Ødegård Jensen who’s a well known stylist in Norway and has worked as fashion editor, stylist and journalist for magazines such as Elle, Mann and FHM. The photographer we worked with was Einar Aslaksen, who has worked with NO Magazine, Oslo Fashion Week and Platinum Magazine, to mention a few.

“I love you back” 16: Death becomes her

Posted by awais on September 17, 2010 | 3 comments

Earlier today I spotted this girl at a cafe. I’ve always had a thing for skull patterns on clothes, shoes, bags and accessories and my wardrobe is full of stuff with skull prints. Maybe it’s because I used to like goth music when I was younger? Needless to say, I fell in love with the cardigan she was wearing.
