The first 100 posts

Posted by awais on July 29, 2010 | No comments

Pictures from some of the posts from the past year

Last summer Qing and I met up in London. We had been classmates in university many years ago, but hadn’t seen each other for the past five years. As we were catching up and reminiscing about the old days, we started talking about fashion blogs and how we both wanted to write one. An idea was born and we registered the blog.

Fast forward 12 months and we have reached a milestone, this post is our 100th post! 12 months have passed since we wrote our first entry, but our writing didn’t really take off before December. We still have a long way to go before we’re where we would like to be, but in the past few months especially we’re slowly starting to get there. As I am writing this we have just reached 31,000 hits. Maybe not a high number compared to many other fashion blogs, but still.

Since our first few posts last year, we have added quite a few new regular features we will work on from now on, these include:

  • I love you back” – A lot of fashion blogs, street style ones in particular, always show the front of an outfit. In this feature we show you the “backside” of fashion.
  • “Outfits” – like a lot of other fashion bloggers, we like to dress up too. And occasionally we show off our outfits.
  • What’s in your bag?” – The one where we put unsuspecting victims on the spot, grab their bags and go through the contents.
  • Fashion Windows” – A series of posts documenting the fashion windows, displays and visual merchandising of different fashion stores around the world.
  • Fashionology – A series for the true fashion geeks, it will have posts about fashion theory and fashion history.

In addition to this we will of course continue to post about other things as well – fashion weeks, different fashion campaigns, models, designers, collections, praises of things we love and rants about things that we don’t.

"Shoes, oh my god, shoes"

Posted by awais on June 6, 2010 | No comments

People who know me know about my slight obsession (understatement) with shoes. I’m always taking pictures of pairs I like and my iphone is full of photos of my own shoes, shoes friends are wearing, shoes I like in shops, shoes random people on the street are wearing etc. So I thought I’d put up a collage with some of these pictures.

“When in doubt, wear red”

Posted by awais on April 27, 2010 | One comment

The quote in the title is by American fashion legend, Bill Blass. Today Vegard was wearing a really nice pair of red suede loafers by Evisu and I just had to take a picture of them. They looked great with his rolled up skinny jeans. I think every man’s wardrobe should have at least one pair of red shoes.

“Show me who your friends are…”

“…and I’ll tell you who you are,” goes a saying. Here’s a couple of snaps I took of my super chic friends Melissa and Vegard the other day. If the saying is anything to go by, I must be the most stylish person ever!

“Never trust a man in a jumpsuit”

Posted by awais on April 18, 2010 | 2 comments

The words in the title of this post were uttered by American poet and author, Charles Bukowski. This post, however, is not a review of any of his literary works. Instead it’s about jumpsuits. Every now and then a trend emerges that just makes you think, what the hell were they thinking? One such trend that has been sweeping across Norway for the past few months is the jumpsuit trend. No, unfortunately we’re not talking about the awesome kind that one would expect to find on kick-ass sites like Unitard Universe (<3). Instead this is a type of jumpsuit that first became popular at afterski parties at Norwegian ski resorts like Hemsedal. The suits are popular amongst teenagers all over the country. They wear them at school, when they go out shopping, or when they’re just hanging out with friends.

001

The prices for these suits go from approximately 90 GBP for the cheapest ones up to 230 GBP for the more expensive ones. The fabrics used in these suits are usually fleece or sweatshirt jersey. The jumpsuits have a hood, a dropped crotch and pockets and a zipper in the front – a bit like something a toddler would wear to bed.

002

Every day when I go to work, I see at least 15 – 20 kids on the street wearing these odd garments. Now, companies like OnePiece, House of Hygge and Daffedresser that specialise in selling these garments is one thing, but what’s really weird is that recently some high street shops like Vero Moda have also started stocking them.

I’ve tried to understand it. I really have, but I just don’t get it. Maybe it’s some sort of counter-reaction to the whole skinny jeans trend, I don’t know. Why anyone in their right mind would want to wear anything this unflattering is just beyond me. It’s like the whole UGGs craze all over again. Luckily spring has finally arrived and soon it will get too hot for people to wear them on the street.

Pastels + hell = pasthell?

Posted by awais on April 16, 2010 | One comment

I’m on a quest at the moment. A quest to find some nice black or dark grey tops to wear this spring. That is easier said than done.

I love spring and it is my favourite season, but I hate spring fashion with passion. Those who know me know that I mostly wear dark colours – dark greys and black to be more exact (I’m an autumn boy at heart). Therefore, what the shops have in store at the moment is a complete nightmare for me. This is the sight that met me earlier today when I went window shopping in my lunch break:

Left to right: Hugo Boss, DSquared2, Paul Smith, Bruun’s Bazaar and Filippa K.

I think autumn has just started in Australia. Maybe I should just order clothes online from there instead.

I’m a Wang fan!

Posted by Qing on April 5, 2010 | No comments

I would really like to shout out that!! —- I’m a big Wang fan!!

This photo of Wang tells all about his energy. He’s always running out and take a massive jumpy bow to the audience at the end of his shows.

Within a short 2 years from Wang-who? to Wang-bang! Alexander Wang’s recognition has soared to sky high, and I…became a solid Wang fan by not only loving his jogger pants but as well as his sharp tailoring skills.

alexander wang 2010 AW/SS collection contrast

I really love the idea of him showing his casual side during summer collection and his tailoring side during winter. But I’m sure before we’re getting used to that, he would change his pace all over again. He’s so unpredictable, but at the same time so naturally full-filled ‘what women want’!

alexander wang 2009 AW/SS contrast

Even beauty and hair looks from his shows are becoming the direction of ‘next big thing’. I must admit the Wang team got super sharp taste…I’m already seeing more and more girls of having the loose side-plaits done

Alexander Wang's loose side plaits

So should I definitely expect to see the greasy side-sweep with worked-hard red-eye-shadow towards AW2010.

Alexander Wang's AW10 hair & beauty style

My biggest thumb-up to Wang is he puts ‘made in China’ label in nearly every single of his garments and yes, he should really be the modern ambassador for speaking out of ‘Chinese products are not just cheap and bold’! Lots of people probably don’t know that brands like John Galliano or Nicole Farhi are partly made in India and South China. The industry is like, as long as certain percentage of the garments like labeling etc are finished in Italy for example, then it can be labeled as ‘made in Italy’. But actually there’re plenty of amazing factories producing luxury brands in Asia. Therefore, I admire Wang’s decision. It’s not only the courage, but also a damn right timing to promote China other than as a ‘big fucking cheap world factory’.

alexander wang and erin wasson

One thing I couldn’t bear is people make link between Alexander Wang and Vera Wang, even on Wikipedia?!! (I thought Wiki is 100% true fact?!) Anyway, Vera got 2 teenage daughters, unless there’s really some unspoken fact?! (I don’t think so!)

He’s always damn right on his instinct. Love his shoes…his bags…and what a clever move of launching the sunglass collection?! …and i shall be waiting for his next project…and i’m hoping that would be a scent of Wang!

Avatar Wave

Posted by Qing on February 3, 2010 | No comments

It seems you could hear conversation starting like this everywhere in London recently—’have you watched Avatar?’ Which actually sounds quite sickly these days. Different people enjoy it in different ways. My colleague who is a 22 year-old straight minded graphic designer guy just nods his head with the technology used within film and the eye-ball impact. He thought the story line is rubbish. While rest of us—above 25 year-old—are thinking ‘the message’.

True, if you say every decade carries out a main message like hippies from the 70s, global warming is definitely the main message for this new decade. Dame Vivienne Westwood urged people by inviting herself to Friday Night with Jonathan Ross show in 2009, that even we are stopping all polluting and all other bad things for environment, it would still take our planet earth to heal itself to its best condition for another 200 something years long. The number is shocking! And this was how I felt while watching Avatar.

Back to the film, I agree that story line is simple. It could be a futuristic story version of how European killed native Americans… and how majority of Chinese people are also linking their own feelings with the local government and property developer…

While the film credit was finally rolling up the screen, the girl sitting next to us sneered ‘that was a rubbish’. My friend snapped her back with ’so why did you sit through the entire film then? trying to get your money worthy?!’. The silly girl couldn’t say anything. That hurts me…people like that…the careless people… …

It seems that Avatar has not only created the wave on big screen, but also in fashion world. High summer 2010 will be seen with many aquatic / sport-inspired items around in UK highstreet.

Even cosmetic brand Avon has launched a new signature fragrance.

I hope the Avatar Wave will not be just a ’splash of water’, but really an impact into people’s heart, whether from fashion, from economy, from people to people, from anything.

This week, some of us looked back at icons of the past, such as // Fade to #c5c5c5’s Marchesa Luisa Casati, Fabulous Finds Gal ’s Horst photography post, and Cafe Fashionista’s take on Diana Vreeland’s famous quotes, while others looked at how far we’ve come, such as The Curvy Fashionista’s plus size fashion observations and A Dress & A Bike ’s thoughts on what it means to be sexy. Each post brought a unique angle to the subject at hand, and raised important topics of self-expression, style, adaptation, trends, individuality, and acceptance. It’s fascinating to examine our own fashion-related introspection, and think about how our inner selves, thoughts and feelings, are reflected through the clothing choices we make, the pairing of certain looks, and of course our writing and blogs.

As expected, there was a fabulous round-up of links in the forum as well, all worthy of your eyeballs!

Earlier this week I joined Independent Fashion Bloggers, a community for…well, independent fashion bloggers. Once a week they ask members to submit their best post from the past week. An editor then chooses the 20 best entries and highlights them in the weekly roundup. I submitted the Mondrian-entry and it got selected! Big thanks to Debutante Clothing who is this week’s editor.
